Service

My service activities support the academic missions of the University of Florida (UF), College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP), and the School of Architecture (SOA). These activities allow me to contribute to the mission of shared governance in a substantive way. Over the past five years, I have actively participated in or chaired numerous academic service committees, averaging 19.9 administrative or committee assignments each semester. This included an average of 15.3 committee assignments in the School of Architecture, two (2) College committee assignments, one (1) University committee assignment. During this period, I have served on six (6) faculty, staff, and director-level search committees. My service obligations have averaged 27.25% of my total effort over the past five years.

In addition to my 9-month faculty appointment, I hold a supplemental administrative appointment as Associate Director of Graduate Programs in the School of Architecture. In this role, I have a number of critical responsibilities, including recruitment, managing graduate admissions, advising graduate students, SACSCOC institutional reporting (graduate programs), NAAB professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program accreditation, and managing Graduate Teaching Assistants who teach coursework in our undergraduate B.Design degree program.

In my role as Associate Director of Graduate Programs, I have created new assessment processes to allow us to more effectively assess coursework, curricular structures, and operational processes in our professional M.Arch degree program. We have created and implemented systems for continuous improvement, and are continuing to both test and refine these processes. These systems are allowing us to measure and document our successes while pinpointing areas of concern. This work is helping us to insure student learning outcomes are being met.

In 2021-22, our program suffered some leadership and staffing difficulties compounded by lingering impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. These issues led to a dramatic drop in our incoming students during the 2022-23 academic year. As Associate Director, I worked to rebuild our recruitment, outreach, and administrative processes to support the graduate programs. As a result, our enrollment numbers have rebounded and our graduate degree programs are generally strong and well-positioned for growth, despite international student recruitment difficulties. We have experienced some headwinds in the last year as our program has been impacted by cuts in graduate teaching assistantships and reduced scholarship funding, but we are continuing to pursue solutions to maximize effectiveness of available funding. Figure 1 shows the number of graduate students matriculating in Architecture relative to each of the college’s other graduate programs.

Scholarly Service: Participation as Invited Studio Critic

One of the most important traditions in architectural design education is the final review of student work. These reviews are formal events, with each student verbally presenting his or her work to a jury of faculty and distinguished guests. The role of a guest jury member is to offer fresh input to the discussions of the student work. To be invited to serve as a jury member is recognition of one’s skills as a designer and critic. See Research for more information.

Scholarly Service: Participation as Invited Guest Lecturer

Guest lecturers are often invited to present highly specialized knowledge to students within the framework of a broader course. To be invited to provide these guest lectures is in recognition of one’s depth of knowledge in the field. I have provided a number of guest lectures at both Princeton University and the University of Florida. See Research for more information.
